Our facility was certified as the 100th Literaturkita in the Landschaftsverband Westfalen Lippe (Regional Authority) in February 2018 and we received our certificate from the County Commissioner of this regional authority, Birgit Westers. For our application as a literature nursery we put together a self-evaluation report in which we explained our literature teaching activities in various thematic areas. We took part in seminars on the methodology of literature teaching in the LWL-Bildungshof Vlotho (Regional Educational Centre) and presented our literature teaching activities during an institutional visit.
In our nursery literature has a particular significance. The children experience books as a companion throughout the day and their whole time in the nursery. Books and other print media don not only serve us for reading and look at – but also as a medium in which we can delve into other worlds to switch off, to relax, to extend our knowledge, as rituals, as a cause for a conversation and a store of ideas, emotions and unknown words never heard before.
A few examples from our daily routine:
- at any time the children have access to picture books that are suited to their interests, their cultural background, their age and the topics from the group. There are also special books in the mix like for example travel guides, children's magazines, catalogues….
- In various ways the children come into contact with the written word
- along with some picture books little story sacks are made to intensify the stories
- there are periodic offers like picture books cinema or multi-lingual reading
- a picture book authoress held a reading suitable for children in the nursery (further readings are planned)
- each week a child from each group gets to take a book bag home
- on request there are also book bags for parents with appropriate specialist literature or also picture books to intensify the topics with the children
